As December approaches, many will start to use their heater daily to keep their home nice and toasty. However, because of heavy usage, your heater could run into some problems if you don’t maintain it. Below are a few ways you can keep your heater running well during this season.

5 Maintenance Tips for Your Heater

  1. Wipe Down the System: One of the best ways to keep your heater in good condition is to wipe it down. This will remove any dirt and debris coating it that could affect how well the heater works. You can do this by running a duster or vacuum over it. While you can use a slightly damp cloth to collect dust, it’s crucial that you ensure the heater is completely dry after doing so.
  2. Do a Quick Trial Run: You might also want to consider doing a quick trial run at the beginning of the season. By doing so, you’ll be able to identify any problems and get them quickly fixed.
  3. Check the Ductwork: Your heater is connected to a vast ductwork system that spreads its warm air throughout your home. If there are loose parts or punctures in the ductwork, it could leak air and cause inconsistent temperatures in your home. Because of this, it’s important to check the ductwork. Is it connected correctly? Is it making strange noises when it runs? If you notice areas of concern, it’s important to have it repaired as soon as possible.
  4. Change the Filters: Changing the heater’s filters will help this device quickly emit air throughout your living space. In addition to this, by changing the filters, it will prevent dust and allergens from spreading in the air. Ideally, change the filters every three months.
  5. Keep its Drainage Tube Clean: A drainage tube sends moisture dripping out of the heater into a drip pan. If the tube gets clogged, it will damage the heater’s flame sensor which will make it harder for the heater to warm your home. You’ll want to examine this tube to ensure it isn’t clogged or foggy. If it is, you can use a plumber’s snake to scrub it out.
