Winter is coming early this year to Sonoma County.

Depending on your tolerance to the cold, you may have turned the heat on already causing an increase in your heating bill. There are several ways in which you can cut costs this winter so that you’ll be able to use that money elsewhere.

  • The easiest way to reduce your bill is to turn the heat down and bundle up. Wear layers in the house, including socks, and when you’re just lounging around, use blankets and even think about purchasing a soft electric blanket.
  • Did you know that just by lowering your thermostat a few degrees, you can save quite a bit on your energy bill. According to energy.gov, “you can save as much as 10% a year on heating and cooling by simply turning your thermostat back 7°-10°F for 8 hours a day from its normal setting.” They also recommended that you keep your thermostat set to 68°F  during the day and lowering it at night.
  • If you’re trying to get warm, why on earth would you want to use your ceiling fan? Actually, by setting your ceiling fan on low and having it circulate while the heat is on ensures that the heat isn’t trapped in any particular area; it helps push the heat down and around so that it is evenly distributed throughout.
  • Check your home for drafts and areas in which heat can easily escape. Repair those areas if you are able to or bring in a professional to determine where the problem areas are. You also may want to check your insulation—your home might need more.
  • Utilize your windows and doors. Open up those blinds and curtains during the day on the side the sun is shining through—this will give your home some free natural heat. Close the doors to rooms that are not being used at the moment; you do not need to lose extra heat to rooms that are not being occupied.
  • Don’t forget about your filters. Just like during the summer, and every other month—you should still be changing out your filters regularly so that they do not get clogged with gunk and cause your HVAC to not work effectively and efficiently.

Most of these tips are simple and easy to do yourself and do not cost much, while some are even free. Forgoing these tips and tricks while cranking your heat up high will cost you quite a pretty penny when you get your energy bill. Be smart and save money this winter!
