Your AC system uses numerous condenser coils to keep you cool during warm days. But, these pieces need to be well-maintained – a task which homeowners tend to neglect. Below you’ll learn more about this important AC part and how you can safely clean it yourself.

What are Condenser Coils?

These wires are thin copper strips that hold the AC’s refrigerant. To release the refrigerant, the coils are connected to a compressor. Extra pressure is added to this component causing the refrigerant to move toward the AC in a liquid form.

Why Clean Them?

It might not seem like these coils would need to be touched once installed, but they do need care. Over time, they can collect dirt and dust. This can coat their exterior making it harder for them to transport the refrigerant. These could also potentially contaminate the refrigerant by mixing in the bacteria that lingers around them.

How to Scrub Condenser Coils

You might be surprised to learn that you can easily clean your AC’s condenser coils with a bit of time and patience.

To begin, make sure the AC’s power is completely turned off. Once you confirm it is, remove the top portion of the device and search for the coils. These are generally situated beneath the upper cover.

Take a brush and gently wipe it against the coils. This will remove the particles stuck on them. When you’re done, take a coil cleaner and spray it over them. This tool uses a 360-degree nozzle to blow any remaining particles away while dissolving grime. While you can use a soap and water mix to do so, this can be a little tricky as you risk it dripping into nearby pieces. To stay safe, it’s probably best to use the coil spray.

After you’re done spraying the coils, secure the AC’s cover in place and turn the power back on.

When Should I Replace the Coils?

While cleaning can extend the life of the coils they’ll eventually need to be replaced. If you notice the coils leaking or that your AC isn’t working as well as it once did, it should be examined by a professional.

Maintaining AC condenser coils is crucial if you want this device to function correctly.
